Learning How To Sew in 5 Simple Steps

Monday, December 31st, 2007

By Susan McKenzie Ever see a perfect article of clothing or home accessory but its in the wrong colour or size? Or perhaps you dont have enough money to buy a designer dress or pillow cover. Learning how to sew is probably one of the easiest ways to personalize your wardrobe and home dcor. Often sewing your own clothing and household items can be less expensive than buying them from a store. Below are five easy steps to learn how to sew. (All steps below assume that youve done a small amount of hand sewing.) 1. Master the first step familiarize yourself with your sewing tools. Borrowing a friends or buying a second-hand machine is probably the most economical way to learn the ins and outs of a sewing machine. Make sure to read the instruction manual cover to cover. Why not buy the top model? Because, like learning how to drive, you want to road test this new skill to make sure its the right fit. 2. Sign up for a sewing class most community centres, sewing stores or even school boards offer sewing courses for beginners. 3. Find easy sewing patterns start of with a simple piece of clothing like a skirt. Most patterns are marked according to difficulty. Dont set yourself up for failure by trying to sew say a prom dress for your first project. Keep it simple with say, a pillow sewing pattern. If you dont have time to shop, many stores sell patterns online, making it easy to chose your project from the comfort and convenience of home. 4. Be precise and be patient sewing is an art of finite measures. Follow your instructors lead. Make sure you measure twice always before cutting. Pay attention to variances of millimetres or quarter inches. Learning how to sew can be frustrating seams may be crooked or clothes too small. Remember, sewing is reversible in many instances so be patient when learning new aspects of the craft. 5. Repeat, repeat practice makes perfect. After completing your first project, do another one right away. Repeating new sewing skills right after youve learned them will ensure you dont forget them when starting subsequent projects. Follow these basic guidelines on learning how to sew and there will be nothing to stop you from decorating your body and home with your very own creations! Quiet Discoveries Lead to Fast Sinus Relief

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Bruce Spiegler Its amazing what you can find when you start your search a little outside the bulls eye. While clicking through Magnetic Resonance Imaging research online, my colleagues and I found some intriguing scientific studies completely by accident! What did we find? Well, let’s just say if you’ve got a stuffy nose you should try magnets before sniffling through that bottle of nasal spray! Did you know that every year, more than 35 million Americans suffer from sinusitis? Its one of the leading chronic diseases in the United States [1]. And its no wonder, as bacteria, viruses, cigarette smoke, and allergens like pollen, mold, dust mite feces and pet dander are all common causes of this condition [2]. Unless you live in a bubble, theres really no escaping these tiny antagonists. The sinuses are actually four pairs of hollow spaces in the bones of the face. Connected to the nose, air is allowed to flow in and out of these spaces. To help warm and filter the air, each sinus is lined with a mucous-producing membrane, called the mucosa [3]. Acute sinusitis occurs when the mucosa is irritated and inflamed. The small openings from the nose to the sinus cavities become congested (or even completely blocked), causing the facial pain and pressure most of us have experienced at some point in time. Mucus production is often increased as well, adding to the pressure, and causing that annoying runny nose symptom [3]. Many people turn to preventive methods like HEPA air filters, or frequent cleaning of carpets and bed sheets to reduce household allergens [4]. Decongestants, saline nasal sprays, and vaporizers are commonly used to treat the symptoms–but as you and I know, they take time to work. This is where those studies come in. Theres an interesting, but little known fact about the sinuses: they are magnetically sensitive. Based on our own research and experiences with clients and health practitioners over the years, weve observed that sinus congestion is dramatically improved or completely relieved with the application of magnetic therapy. In fact, taking about 20-30 minutes on average, its one of the conditions that biomagnetics alleviates quickest. Until recently, though, we didnt have much research to back these findings (other than our own records). But, while sifting through online abstracts from MRI research, I happened to stumble upon this: Dating back to 1983, a study was conducted to assess the influence of magnetic fields on the physiology and behavior of biological organisms, and to search for possible magnetic sources within the organisms themselves. It was found that a wide range of life forms could detect and orient to magnetic fields. (Like having a built-in compass.) Results showed magnetic orientation by bacteria was due to the presence of particles of magnetite (ferric/ferrous oxide) within the organisms. The same magnetic material was also found in bees, homing pigeons, dolphins and other organisms–including humans. More specifically, the researchers found that “the bones of the sphenoid/ethmoid sinus complex of humans are magnetic and contain deposits of ferric iron”. (The sphenoid/ethmoid sinuses are located between the eyes and progress inward towards the back of the head [3].) Refining our search, we were able to uncover other MRI studies confirming this finding. Heres a brief timeline of what was found: 1986 - “Magnetic Resonance Imaging [using a 1.5 Tesla (15,000 Gauss) magnet and a spin echo technique] has revealed a remarkably intense signal from abnormal tissue in the human paranasal sinuses. Inflammatory disease in the maxillary, sphenoid, ethmoid, and frontal sinuses has been detected and demonstrated with greater clarity than any other available technique.” 1990 - A study conducted at the UCLA School of Medicine tested conditions affected by MRI field strength. Results illustrated that “magnetic susceptibility artifacts are prevalent on the boundary of air-containing paranasal sinuses”. 1995 - Research at Uppsala University in Sweden discovered that “large, local magnetic field variations up to 3 parts per million were found in the human brain near interfaces between air or bone and brain tissues”. 2002 - An Ohio State University study compared differences in magnetic field susceptibility at tissue interfaces in the human head. “Considerable magnetic field inhomogeneities were observed in the inferior frontal lobes and inferior temporal lobes, particularly near the sphenoid sinus and the temporal bones.” These four independent studies all relate to the notion that human sinuses are magnetically sensitive. When compared to other regions of the head, more intense magnetic field readings are seen, and conditions of inflammation are more easily observed. So how does this lead to sinusitis relief? Magnetic therapy is proven to be effective in reducing inflammation, a primary symptom of sinusitis. By reducing inflammation of the mucosa, mucous blockages can be drained and the sinus cavities reopened. This, allows you to breathe freely again, while eliminating the facial pain caused by pressure build-up. When applied properly, magnetic therapy products can relieve sinus congestion in as little as 15 minutes. That’s faster than any decongestant or vaporizer, lasts longer than most nasal sprays, and is completely free of any side effects (like dryness or burning). Not to mention, you won’t need to worry about buying refills or possible addiction to certain nasal decongestants. What Therion products work best to help relieve sinusitis? The Eye & Sinus Mask is designed specifically for relief of your sinus congestion. Inside it has 28 neodymium magnets covering areas around your eyes, forehead and upper cheeks. (The magnetic field has an effective penetration depth up to 2.5 inches.) You can expect sinus and headache relief within 15-25 minutes of wearing it. For even faster relief plus more restful sleep, Therion ’s magnetic dual contour pillow is the perfect choice. The visco elastic (memory) foam is soft and comfortable, but also supportive. You’ll actually feel it adjusting and conforming to the shape of your head and neck. It’s ideal to use as a regular sleeping pillow, as the magnetic field reaches the pineal gland. This is a magnetically sensitive area in the brain that functions to induce sleep by secreting melatonin. (See the article “Having Trouble Sleeping” found in the Learning Center at www.therionresearch.com. So before you open that box of non-drowsy decongestants or reach for the nasal spray on your nightstand, give magnetic therapy a try. If its fast acting with no side effects, and never needs a refill, what do you have to lose? A Little Help Finding Love

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By M Jackson A little help finding love online. Visit the dating sites. If finding love online is what you’re after then the most important thing you can do is to get out there and network with fellow singles. Visit dating sites and picture personals sites otherwise finding love online simply isn’t going to happen for you. A quick search on the Internet will find you plenty of sites like this, in fact if you wait around long enough without a pop up blocker on and you won’t even need to search. Finding love online couldn’t be easier, there are so many sites that are literally jam packed full of hopeful singles that it may be easier not finding love online. You can never have enough friends. In your quest of finding love online it is very important not to concentrate on the fact that your are trying to find love but concentrate on making friends and if you do find your soul mate then that’s fantastic but not guaranteed. As in real life if you go out looking for love then there’s an imminent danger of looking desperate and having very little success. Finding love online involves taking your time getting to know people, chatting online, sending emails and finding out as much as you can about the other person. Don’t just jump into the first cyber relationship that comes your way. You could be sat on the other side of the world to the person you are chatting to or they could be from next door but one, but finding love online will only come easily if you relax and have fun. That’s what it’s all supposed to be about after all. Don’t lie to look good. I know there is a strong temptation to embellish the truth but if you’re serious about finding love online then don’t do it. Your little lies will catch up with in the end and they normally have a really nasty way of doing so. If you have to lie to attract someone then perhaps you should be looking for a different someone to chat to. Finding love online is about being honest and being yourself. If you want to one day meet your online partner and maybe take the relationship to the next level there is no way carrying on the lie about being six foot four and captain of your former school football team. Conversely, if you think someone you are talking to is lying to you perhaps you’re best out of there at the start but don’t believe that just because they’re on the Internet means they’ve got no life away from the computer screen. It’s quite possible that you could be talking to the American rock climbing champion or the lead singer from a good but relatively unknown rock band. You just never know and although there are undoubtedly people on these sites, if you’re serious about finding love online, you’re going to have to trust someone at some time. Men Don’t Search - Be Searched For! Women - GO SEARCH!

By Louise Gyll Why Online Dating can help you find Your Soul Mate I have a question for you . . . Do you really want to be happy? If you had to think about that for even a second Im sorry but there isnt any help for you. You should crave happiness like air. It should be something that you feel so strongly about that youll do anything, within reason, to get it. So how can you get this happiness? Well there is no greater feeling in life than the feeling of true love. Or the first kiss after that perfect first date. These are feelings that us mortals live for - feelings that everyone on this planet should be able to experience. So why shouldnt you? Hence the huge growth in Online Dating! Online dating has for some time had an aura about it that people who get involved in it are losers who couldnt get themselves a date in the real world. Which is nonsense. Many people just havent the time due to work commitments to find that elusive partner. Others find the initial approach too hard therefore an email is a lot easier. Whilst some just love the buzz of excitement when an email from a potential soul mate comes through. Whichever category you fall in, be it one of the above or another, you are not a loser. The truth is this: A survey showed that 83% of the people who thought that online dating was sad were single. The Internet has become the ultimate haven for singles without the drunks, the noise, and the exorbitant cost you pay to be in the bars desperately hoping to be noticed. Thanks to online dating sites, you dont have to ask your mother or friend to help you hook up with someone they think is perfect for you which in most cases, isnt. So here are a few tips to help you along the way: Guys believe it or not you are ten times more likely to find a partner if you DONT search for someone rather than if you do. And ladies you are much more likely to find a partner if you search for one. Include a recent photo a no-brainer you would think, but so many put up old photos or worse, one of someone else! Guys include an aaahh photo, one that makes the ladies go gooey. Your niece or nephew on your lap or the neighbours puppy. Trust me it will work. Spend time on the headline of your advert. Make it intriguing, challenging and most of all, relevant to your photo. Now there is obviously more to it than just the above, but these are the initial concepts to concentrate on and if you want to understand more about not just where youve been going wrong, but also more about the psychology of the opposite sex when it comes to online dating visit www.datingpartner.net. Before You Say I Do

By Naim A Samad One out of every two marriages ends in divorce. Millions of Americans are filing for divorce. As the divorce rate continues to escalate in America, dating relationships are becoming more popular. Social scientists have led us in the wrong direction, as they embrace incorrect solutions to a momentous problem. They are sending forth a message that is misleading pertaining to dating relationships. This message by social scientists will continue to mislead individuals who sincerely want to establish healthy dating relationships, with the hope of embracing an everlasting marriage. In this article, we will explore the truth behind the soaring divorce rate. In our search for a remedy, we are spending billions of dollars annually chasing illusionary solutions. In the previous article, The Art of Selection, we explored how the selection process is retarded when selecting our dating partners. Ones selfish soul perverts the meaning of dating that may lead to marriage by focusing on imagination and desires. Take a step further; let us look at imaginary pleasures and security. Trapped in the fairy tale syndrome, we pursue dating and love relationships in an effort to receive immediate and future gratification from our dating partners. The selfish soul commits acts that weaken the foundation of a healthy relationship from the very start. The potential dating partner commits blameworthy acts to make a good impression. He/she gives a misleading representation of oneself, being overly kind, spending extravagantly, being conscious of ones physical appearance, always appearing truthful, having late night telephone marathons, and displaying a disposition of caring and commonality of interests are commonplace when painting a handsome picture of deception. In ones effort to insure the acquisition of his/her desires, he/she resorts to deception to consummate personal relationships that eventually end in disaster. This activity is the beginning of the breakdown in the marriage union before a potential marriage couple says, I do. Before marriage and during the courtship, the relationship seems magical. Every day is a heartwarming experience. It feels so surreal and no one likes to be aroused from a dream. This state of elation takes total control of us, blocking out any semblance of rational thought. Helplessly hypnotized, we become a servant to an oppressive master, our own desires. We absorb this form of deception similar to a sponge that absorbs water that eventually transforms into tears. Allowing our desires to be the criteria to make decisions exposes us to the most destructive form of a relationship. It becomes impossible to be fair, just, equitable, impartial, unprejudiced, unbiased, objective or dispassionate with others or ourselves. If the family structure is the foundation of society, then we must rethink our strategy when approaching a serious relationship. As the dawn of reality rushes in and the dusk of deception slowly fades away, reflecting the light of reason, it becomes apparent we are in an undesirable dating relationship. It is no surprise that our mates disposition changes. He/she goes from being overly kind to being overly aggressive, mentally and physically. Sexual passion dissipates, extravagant spending dissolves, the truth becomes lies, commonality of interest changes to two strangers passing by one another in the night, and the list of deceptions continues to unfold. Medicinal Plants is One of the Most Promising Fields of Study in South Africa

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By Gerald Crawford There is virtually no area of South Africa without its particular floral treasure or species of special beauty or interest. These include succulents that look almost exactly like stones (lithops), mangroves, tree ferns, traditional food plants and those that would kill you if you took a bite, and - one of the most promising fields of study in South Africa - a large number of plants of medicinal value. Some of these, such as the Aloe ferox, a purgative, were discovered to be medicinally useful by the early European colonists; many more have long been known and used by indigenous African people. Yet for all the spectacular plants to be found, perhaps the landscape that most eloquently conjures up the spirit of South African flora is the typical savannah, with its (often dry) grasses and more-or-less thickly scattered shrubs and thorn trees. Lingering images may vary widely, from fynbos field to subtropical forest, but for many South Africans the thorn tree is the nesting place of their hearts. DID YOU KNOW? * The medicinal plant Siphonochilus aethiopicus (wild ginger or isiPhephetho) has been exploited to extinction in the KwaZulu/Natal region. Warburgia salutaris (pepper-bark tree or isiBhaha) is on the brink of extinction in this region. Supplies of these plants now come from Gauteng and Swaziland. * Ring-barking of most large stinkwood and assegai trees in KwaZulu/Natal has reduced the numbers of these trees drastically and this bark is now obtained from areas within the former Transkei. * Although plant material forms the basis of most traditional medicines, animal parts are also used. As with plants, there is concern that exploitation of certain animals is contributing to a serious decline in their numbers. Of particular concern are the python, pangolin, striped weasel, giant girdled lizard, and the Cape, lappet-faced, and whiteheaded vultures. WHAT YOU CAN DO * Grow medicinal plants! Silverglen Nursery can supply a simple starter pack with instructions on how to get started and also offer one-day educational workshops for interested people. * If you are a landowner, consider supplying seed to Silverglen Nursery, the Natal Parks Board, the KwaZulu Dept. Nature Conservation, or local traditional healers. * If you own, or know of land that is to be developed, contact your local conservation agency or regional Botanical Society branch to negotiate salvaging the medicinal plants. Guaranteed Gladioli, Summer Colour that Returns

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By James Kilkelly Would you like a summer bedding plant that you do not have to renew year after year? Well by planting hybrid Gladiolus corms, you can attain mid to late summer colour year after year with only occasional renewal. Colourful blooms Sometimes called gladioli bulbs (more correctly gladioli corms), these South African members of the Iris family are ideal for colour impact. Most garden centres stock gladioli in whites, pinks, oranges, reds (best for impact), bicolour and the rare blue flowered varieties. Planting Most Gladiolus flowers last approx 2 to 3 weeks, so if youre sneaky and stagger your plantings at weekly intervals you can stretch out the length of time they will be in bloom. Plant from the start of April till the end of May in an area that receives upwards of 4 hours of sunlight a day. Plant the bulbs 4 to 5 inches deep (10 to 12cm) and at an approximate spacing of 4 inches, ideally your soil will be rich with free drainage to prevent rotting of the bulb over winter. Group the bulbs in clusters of 5 or more of the same colour for impact, except in a cottage garden where the mixing up of Gladiolus colours is quite acceptable. It is advisable to water well in dry weather as the foliage can be extremely thirsty. Look after the cultivation requirements and you will be rewarded by sword-like leaves topped by trumpet or funnel shaped flowers in vertical rows which bloom from the bottom upwards. The sword-like leaves inspires the Latin name Gladiolus which means little sword, in fact some people refer to them as sword lilies. Flower arranging uses Gladiolus flowers can be cut for indoor arrangements by using 3 to 5 different colours bunched together, just be careful not to remove all the leaves from the bulb as this will severely weaken its bloom next season. Miniature hybrids When purchasing your Gladiolus bulbs in the garden centre ask for Primulinus or miniature hybrids as these varieties grow to about 2ft (0.6 metre) and do not require staking like some of the larger varieties. A Look at Bariatric Surgery Patients

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Eddie Tobey Individuals who are interested in bariatric surgery need to be aware of the ramifications. Although significant weight loss can be achieved with the procedure, patients need to have realistic weight loss expectations. Even after the surgery, most patients will not achieve their ideal body weight. Patients with a lower BMI to begin with generally lose a greater percentage of excess weight, while those with a higher initial BMI will likely lose more total weight. Patients who approach the surgery with a goal of improving their health resulting and quality of life will have the most success. Patients also need to be aware that bariatric surgery is just the first step. Post-surgery, they will require lifelong medical surveillance and must go into the procedure with a complete understanding of the surgery, the possible risks, and the lifelong changes it will require. With that said, severely overweight people who have tried diets and exercise but have not achieved lasting weight loss may be candidates for bariatric weight loss surgery. To be a suitable candidate, a person must meet certain criteria prescribed by a doctor or insurance company. Example criteria include excess weight of 100 pounds (or 100 percent over ideal weight), age range between 18 and 60 ears, a BMI (body mass index) of 40 or greater. Other qualifying criteria include a BMI of between 35 and 40 coupled with one or more of the following conditions: diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, sleep apnea, or degenerative joint disease. Also, repeated and failed attempts to lose weight with the aid of diets, exercise, behavior modification, or weight loss drugs make bariatric surgery an attractive option. Finally, patients should show no history of drug and/or alcohol abuse. Market Research - Identifying Key Markets for Export

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Amit Kumar Chatterjee Successful companies concentrate on one foreign market at a time, moving on to the next only after succeeding in the last. Demand and trend are the two key factors that determine which countries to select first and how to set priorities. Market research helps you identify promising markets through objective analysis of available facts and statistics. Its true, many companies start export whenever it receives unsolicited orders from abroad. Although this type of selling is valuable, the company may discover even more promising markets by conducting a systematic search. Primary and Secondary Market Research Market research is conducted by analysing primary or secondary data resources. In conducting primary market research, a company collects data directly from foreign marketplace through interviews, surveys, feedback and other such direct contact with potential buyers. Primary market research has the advantage of being tailored to the needs of the company and provides answers to specific questions, but it is invariably time consuming and very expensive. Secondary market research is based on analysis of statistical data such as trade statistics. To be effective, the data should be reliable and cover significant historical period. Though it is considerably less expensive than primary research, one should be aware of its limitations. For example, the most recent statistics for some countries may be more than two years old. Moreover, the data may be too broad to be of much value to a company. Statistics may also be distorted by incomplete data-gathering techniques. Finally, statistics for services are often unavailable. Yet, even with these limitations, secondary research is a valuable and relatively easy first step for a company to take. It may be the only step needed if the company decides to export indirectly through an intermediary, since the later may have advanced research capabilities Step 1 - Collect Data Collect export statistics published by authentic sources. In India, there are two major sources for reliable trade statistics - Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) and Customs. DGCIS publishes ‘Monthly Statistics of Foreign Trade of India’ Its March issue contains cumulative data for whole financial year (April to March). After publishing extremely voluminous books for years - DGCIS has started publishing this data in CD-ROM from 2004. DGCIS statistics is extremely important for macro level data analysis. One can find out product and country wise (as also country and product wise) statistics for whole year from DGCIS publications. You may find more information on DGCIS data including examples at Sources and Evaluation of Indian Foreign Trade Statistics Customs department publishes port-wise “Daily List of Export and Import”. This list contains brief details of every shipment made through a seaport or airport. For more information including demodata - check Eximstat Database Step 2 - Identify Promising Markets Identify five to ten large and fast-growing markets for products in your export basket. Check volume as well as trend for a historical perspective of 5 to 10 years. Ask critical questions - has market growth been consistent year to year ? Has there been a shift in product choice ? Was there a seasonal bias ? For example - analysis of spice export data for last few years may show increasing sale of curry-type mixed powder spices and modest or decreasing sale of whole seeds. Another example - increased rice export to Bangladesh may be traced to floods in that country rather than any long term change in demand profile. Such spurt in demand is unlikely to sustain for long and should be considered a temporary phenomenon. In both cases - historical analysis of foreign trade statistics can help you identify seasonal bias or shift in demand. Step 3 - Identify Emerging Markets Identify some smaller but fast-emerging markets that may provide ground-floor opportunities. If the market is just beginning to open up, there may be fewer competitors than in established markets. Growth rates should be substantially higher in these countries to qualify as up-and-coming markets, given the lower starting point. Step 4 - Assess Target Markets Ascertain the sources of competition, including the extent of domestic industry production. Analyze factors affecting marketing and use of the product in each market, such as end-user sectors, channels of distribution, cultural factors and business practices. Finally, identify tariff and non-tariff barriers (if any) for the product being imported into the target country Step 5 - Draw Final List After analyzing the data, the company may conclude that its marketing resources would be applied more effectively to a few countries. In general, if the company is new to exporting, then efforts should be directed to fewer than ten markets. Exporting to one or two countries will allow the company to focus its resources without jeopardizing its domestic sales efforts. Anniversary Gift Ideas

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By Ross Bainbridge Did you know that it was Emily Post who, in 1922, wrote her first etiquette book that gave suggestions as to what anniversary gifts should be given for the first, fifth, tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, twenty-fifth and fiftieth wedding anniversaries? She recognized the importance of given traditional gifts and wanted to set a standard for her family and friends and the public in general. Years later, she included more years to her list and recommended that gifts should be given the first fifteen years of marriage and every five years after that. During the early years of marriage, gifts are simple and can be quite inexpensive. For instance, the first year is paper, and a gift can be as simple as a greeting card. Other token gifts include cotton for year two, wood for year five, iron for six and tin for ten years of marital bliss. A great gift idea for any anniversary is a personalized poetry gift framed in silver for a couples 25th or gold for a couples 50th. Anniversary poems can be personalized for any wedding year and can be framed in a variety of ways. Of course, there are many other anniversary gift ideas that can be given including flowers, candy, jewelry, gift certificates, etc. There are no end to the websites that have literally thousands of suggestion as to what might make a special gift for a couple you know who are celebrating any number of years together.
