She even gave you tickets to see their day-after-Thanksgiving game. Now that was special. So is she. Make this occasion memorable. Okay to be nervous. Its a big day. The wedding is still a long way off. So inhale and take it one step at a time. Practice but relax, nothing will go perfectly. There will always be a slight glitch; weather, getting a cold, work, family emergency. Best bet: Make a plan B. Itll help stem the disappointment. Another day, setting or time. Go for bold, not cute. There was a time when putting an engagement ring in a fortune cookie or inside a special cake was all the rage. But horror stories of the ring in question being swallowed or delivered to the wrong person made restaurants shy away from that particular proposal venue. Best bet: Pick a special restaurant or caf, and pop the question over a bottle of champagne. Public proposals are always memorable. The ring, the bended knee, the whole nine yards. Some gals are traditionalists, wanting the prince charming approach. Others prefer the laid back, hey so what are you doing for the rest of your life, again? attitude. Best bet: Think. About her religious beliefs, politics, general philosophy on life and then youll know if a sunset and ice or a dinner at Chez Grande Moment is more appropriate. Surprise but verify. In the Reagan era there was a saying: Trust but verify. It basically meant check first before you trust. Same goes for proposals, check first before you ask. Many a man was surprised himself when the fiance-to-be said no. Maybe shes not ready. Best bet: Has she been dropping hints about moving in or having a more committed relationship. Then it’s a green light. Be creative. The whole point of a proposal is that it is a big surprise. A ring and a note tucked in a lingerie drawer, an airplane with a sign behind it, a karaoke song, spray painting her name on a water tower. Best bet: The more creative the more memorable. And personalize the proposal. But be careful, vandalism is a misdemeanor. Oh and guys, make sure you get a yes. Even if shes sobbing at least get a head nod.
