Will She Say Yes? The Perfect Proposal

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Bernadette Sukley Youve been dating for six months and you know shes a keeper. She likes the Penguins for crying out loud! No one likes the Penguins. She even gave you tickets to see their day-after-Thanksgiving game. Now that was special. So is she. Make this occasion memorable. Okay to be nervous. Its a big day. The wedding is still a long way off. So inhale and take it one step at a time. Practice but relax, nothing will go perfectly. There will always be a slight glitch; weather, getting a cold, work, family emergency. Best bet: Make a plan B. Itll help stem the disappointment. Another day, setting or time. Go for bold, not cute. There was a time when putting an engagement ring in a fortune cookie or inside a special cake was all the rage. But horror stories of the ring in question being swallowed or delivered to the wrong person made restaurants shy away from that particular proposal venue. Best bet: Pick a special restaurant or caf, and pop the question over a bottle of champagne. Public proposals are always memorable. The ring, the bended knee, the whole nine yards. Some gals are traditionalists, wanting the prince charming approach. Others prefer the laid back, hey so what are you doing for the rest of your life, again? attitude. Best bet: Think. About her religious beliefs, politics, general philosophy on life and then youll know if a sunset and ice or a dinner at Chez Grande Moment is more appropriate. Surprise but verify. In the Reagan era there was a saying: Trust but verify. It basically meant check first before you trust. Same goes for proposals, check first before you ask. Many a man was surprised himself when the fiance-to-be said no. Maybe shes not ready. Best bet: Has she been dropping hints about moving in or having a more committed relationship. Then it’s a green light. Be creative. The whole point of a proposal is that it is a big surprise. A ring and a note tucked in a lingerie drawer, an airplane with a sign behind it, a karaoke song, spray painting her name on a water tower. Best bet: The more creative the more memorable. And personalize the proposal. But be careful, vandalism is a misdemeanor. Oh and guys, make sure you get a yes. Even if shes sobbing at least get a head nod. Green House Gardening Tips and Tricks

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Percy Troughton Gardening enthusiasts in the more interesting temperate climates and any place where there are four seasons are faced with great benefits as well as challenges. Because of the four seasons, gardeners are blessed with huge plant varieties conducive for planting on one or two of the seasons. In the period of a year, they are given an opportunity to plant varieties that must grow in cooler climates, and take advantage of the sunny summer to plant those that would require more exposure to the sun. However, the seasonality of plant varieties may pose challenges to those who would rather grow plants continuously, regardless of season. This is especially true for flower and fruit varieties that require continuous sunlight for an entire year, for example, or fruit and vegetable perennials that do not bear fruit and instead shrivel up in the winter. The response to these challenges is the creation of greenhouses or greenhouse facilities. A greenhouse is a structure made of glass or plastic that stores up the suns rays in order to simulate the temperatures in the spring all year long inside. By storing up heat inside a greenhouse, it allows individuals to grow plants continuously even while winter rages hard outside it. Greenhouses also go by the name glasshouses or hothouses. The glass or plastic used in the construction of greenhouses are specially designed to have transmission qualities that will allow for the suns ultraviolet rays to be stored inside the greenhouse facility, providing a warm atmosphere inside, and in effect, warming the plants and the soil. A greenhouse leaves little or no openings through which the air heated by the stored sunlight can escape; leaving a small window or hatch open in a greenhouse will lead to a drastic drop in temperatures. The general idea of a greenhouse is to protect temperature and climate sensitive plants from extreme shifts in temperatureeither too hot or too cold. Maintaining a greenhouse has its own share of toil. Unlike the normal outdoor environment, which may be left to its own devices to some extent as nature creates some degree of balance, a greenhouse must be placed under strict regulation. Inside the greenhouse is a controlled environment that must simulate the outdoors without overdoing it. For a start, it must regulate heat and humidity inside the facility. Other factors to be considered are irrigation of the plants (and sufficiency of the water available to them), light exposure, and the presence of pests and diseases must be put into great consideration. Moreover, due to the fact that the spring outdoors is sealed into a single facility, natural activities like pollination must be simulated by the introduction of species that will help make this possible. Bumblebees are the most popular option for pollinators in greenhouses. It is recommended that greenhouses be built in the southeast portion of the property. It is in this way that the minimal sunlight available during the winter will be maximized by the greenhouse. Moreover, the house can serve to protect the greenhouse from strong winter blizzards coming in from the north. Greenhouses may be built attached to a house, or as stand-alone structures. The latter option provides more growing room for the greenhouse facility. While it may seem that there is too much to do in order to simply start a greenhouse, gardening enthusiasts will be more than willing to vouch for greenhouses, especially if gardening is a hobby. Gardening affords even the busiest of folks to tend to their plants when they are available. With a greenhouse, the constraints of day and night, and even the seasons, are put in the backseat. Greenhouses provide the option of tending to gardens even at night because lighting and heat is consistently present inside the structure. Moreover, it gives gardeners the ability to plant exotic flowers and fruits that are usually grown in warmer tropical areas as they are able to control light exposure and heat inside the greenhouse. Green houses may even provide profit-making possibilities for gardeners. With potted plants for indoor growing and flowers growing in demand, greenhouse owners are given opportunities to sell what they grow inside their greenhouses to buffer whatever maintenance costs they incur along the way. In the higher-latitude territories, greenhouses carry the important task of growing fresh produce in areas where the climates are harsh and cruel on plants. This is one of the biggest reasons for huge greenhouse facilities that house vegetables and fruits more than flowers and exotic foliage. At the end of the day, greenhouses allow for the creation of a miniaturized and highly controlled natural environment to suit gardening needs. Its growing potential to provide for fresh produce in territories even with the instability of global climate proves to be a benefit that may be explored in the future. Should I Count Calories To Lose Weight ?

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Christopher Ruane Counting calories may seem old-fashioned today, given the proliferation of low-carb and high protein diets. However, a number of dieticians maintain that the low calorie approach is actually the best approach to weight loss.Lowering the number of calories can have a marked effect on our waistlines. The majority of diets offer dieters 1,000 to 1,500 calories each day.It would be wrong to assume that everyone who needs to lose weight should be on a 1,000 calorie diet.In fact, the amount of calories you need is a function of your current weight, your metabolism, and exercise you do. Diets recommended by doctors, are based upon a low-calorie model. When dieting, you should assume that you will lose only about a pound a week.During the initial stages of your diet, you may find that you are actually losing more weight than that because you are losing water. It is perhaps best to work with a dietician in order to fine-tune your individual needs. Still, even if you are curbing your calorie count, youll need to make sure that what you eat is nutritious.By paying close attention to nutrition labels, you can determine the vitamin and mineral count of much of what you consume. There are certain general requirements for a healthy diet. Yet another reason for diet failure is hidden calories. You may literally be consuming calories and not even realize it. For instance, the frappucinos that are so popular today are loaded with caloriesas many as 600 in a single serving! You may also indulge in sugary sodasanother source of extra calories. By taking a few simple steps, such as eliminating the exotic coffee drinks from your diet and substituting skimmed milk for whole milk, you may be able to eliminate the hidden calories. You need to make sure that you get enough protein. For the typical woman, this would amount to 50 grams per day; for the typical man, 63 grams per day. Protein is vitally important for strengthening your muscles and teeth and maintaining good skin .Protein sources include lean meat, fish, chicken, eggs, beans, and nuts. Experts recommend that you have at least two servings of protein a day. While low carb diets may be all the rage, a number of dieticians say you need as many as 100 grams of carbohydrates a day. This means consuming servings of pasta, cereal, and bread in order to maintain a healthy energy level. You should also eat at least 20 grams of fiber each day to aid your digestion. Less than a third of your calories should come from fat in order to enable you to keep the pounds off.Only about one-tenth of your calories should be derived from saturated fat. Also, keep your cholesterol count under control in order to keep heart disease at bay. An important aspect of good nutrition that many individuals forget is water whiich is a large percentage of our bodies.Medical experts by and large agree that you should drink at least eight glasses of water everyday.Exercise, however, could make you yearn for additional water. Although it may be tempting, you should not skip meals. This only serves to decrease your metabolism, causing you to burn fat more slowly. Even a small meal is better than no meal at all. Weight loss experts, however, differ about the number of meals you should eat each day. Some recommend the standard three meals with a couple of snacks, while others recommend five or six small meals each day. You should probably check with your physician to see which approach is appropriate for you. Losing weight can be a difficult challenge, no matter what your age. There are so many temptations around, so many opportunities to boost your calorie count. Also, you might try to follow one diet, only to find that it is difficult to sustain. As a result, the low-calorie diet may be the best method around for consistent weight loss. While you might not be able to lose weight quickly, you can shed pounds eventually. By being patient and committed to your weight loss program, you can ultimately lose the weight you need to.You may also be more successful in your dieting if you consider it to be a lifestyle change. Therefore, your diet becomes a meal plan for life. This means that you must change the way you look at food.It is designed to be fuel for your body, and nothing more. As a result, you should not turn to food to make you feel better or to provide you with a sense of comfort.A lifestyle change implies commitment; it means that you are prepared to follow the plan for the long haul. If you feel as if you cannot be on your diet for any appreciable length of time, perhaps its time to consider a different diet. Your aim ultimately should be not simply to lose weight, but to become healthier. A fad diet will not allow you to reach that milestone. Nature Healing Method for Bronchitis

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Grata Young In acute cases of bronchitis, the patient should fast on orange juice and water till the acute symptoms subside. The procedure is to take the juice of an orange in a glass of warm water every two hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thereafter, the patient should adopt an all-fruit diet for two or three days. In case of chronic bronchitis, the patient can begin with an all-fruit diet for five to seven days, taking each day three meals of fresh juicy fruits. After the all-fruit diet, the patient should follow a well-balanced diet of seeds, nuts and grains, vegetables and fruits. For drinks, unsweetened lemon water or cold or hot plain water may betaken. The patient should avoid meats, sugar, tea, coffee, condiments, pickles, refined and processed foods, soft-drinks, candies, ice-cream and products made from sugar and white flour. One of the most effective remedy for bronchitis is the use of turmeric powder. A teaspoonful ofthis powder should be administered with a glass of milk two or three times daily. It acts bestwhen taken on an empty stomach. Another effective remedy for bronchitis is a mixture of dried ginger powder, pepper and longpepper taken in equal quantities three times a day. A hot Epsom-salts bath every night or every other night will be highly beneficial during the acutestages of the attack. This bath is prepared by dissolving three lbs. of Epsom-salts to 60 litres ofwater having a temperature of 100 o F. The patient should remain immersed in the bath forabout 20 minutes. In case of chronic bronchitis, this bath may be taken twice a week. Hot towelswrung out and applied over the upper chest are also helpful. After applying three hot towels inturn for two or three minutes each, one should always finish off with a cold towel. A cold packshould also be applied to the upper chest several times daily in acute conditions. The procedureis to wring out some linen material in cold water, wrap two or three times round the affected partand cover it with some flannel. The pack can remain for about an hour at a time. Fresh air and outdoor exercises are also essential to the treatment of bronchitis and the patientshould take a good walk everyday. He should also perform yogic kriyas such as jalneti andvamandhouti and yogic asanas such as ekpaduttansana, yogamudra, bhujangasana, shalabhasana, padmasana and shavasana. Does A Powerful Self Image Keep Depressive Illness At Bay? Part 2

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Christopher Ruane Depressed people feel that they are to be blamed when things go wrong and theyre “just at the right place and at the right time” when things go well. Heres an exercise to help you realize your value and reduce your feelings of bad luck towards life events that seem to plague you. Think of a recent memorable event. Describe it. Think about how the contributions of other people, as well as things beyond control, were responsible for this event. List the ways in which your efforts, talents, skills, experience, appearance, etc. were accountable for this event. What rate or percentage of the responsibility/ accountability for this event was attributable to you? Was any of it due to you at all ? Do this for several events, both positive and negative. You have almost always worked for positive events and against depressing events. So, you can now decide if you aren’t causing more positive things than you thought. It is a known fact that depressed people belittle their own abilities. Ok, if you can see yourself as responsible for negative events -over half of the time - see if others aren’t responsible. You will come to realize that your abilities, traits, and contributions can cause good things to happen and that usually external factors beyond your control are explain the negative outcomes. What does the future hold for me ? When we are depressed, we have the tendency to concentrate on the past or to see initially the immediate consequences, and not the long-term positive results of what we are doing now. The sufferings in the past can make the depressed people ignore events and circumstances that might be awkward but very critical or rewarding to their future. Become aware of the effects of your internal voice that no one else hears except you by analyzing the outcome of some activity each day. This is important for us to do, but it is even more essential and difficult for you if you are a pessimistic person with low self-esteem. Reinfore Yourself as a worthwhile personSome depressed people feel that indulging themselves over rewards for any accomplishment is being egotistic. It is normal to pat yourself in the back once in a while. Research has shown that whenever we feel down and troubled we tend to do less pleasant activities, but just doing more enjoyable things is not an assurance to beating symptoms of depression. However, actions do change feelings and can steer you away from depressive illness. You can increase your activity level, find something exciting and worthwhile to engage in. Start with easy tasks, and work up to harder. Reward yourself as you accomplish each task for motivation. It gives you the incentive to keep on trying. Research also indicates that an aerobic exercise program for at least 30 minutes 3 times a week lessen major depression as much or more than medication. Exercise would be good for you in many ways, not just with depression. Some studies shows that exercise alone three or five times a week for 30 minutes reduces symptoms of depression by about 50%. That is as good as taking antidepressants or getting psychotherapy treatment. However if you suffer from severe depression this alone will not cure you, but it will help. Get lots of rest, relaxation, and sleep always. Our personal situation greatly influences your happiness and depression. It has been found that loneliness, dependency, and marital problems often precede an episode of depressive illness. Try to change your depressing surrounding - working conditions, family relationships, stressful situations, and the like. Our mood reflects our environment. What to say when you talk to yourself Reduce the pessimistic and self-criticizing thoughts that characterize depressed people such as: I am always a failure. This is a hopeless case. Im messing up again. It will only get worse. To control these depressing thoughts, try restricting sad thoughts to specific times or places. Then reward yourself upon eliminating negative thoughts, and replace them with positive visions every time you have low moods. Try your best to have a lot more positive thoughts. Be thoughtful then you will feel that your friends appreciate your efforts. Realize that nothing in this world is insurmountable and that every problem has solutions. Be happy. Feeling self-satisfaction may help you swing your low mood from sad to happy. Practice smiling more, acting in a more confident manner, dressing up more attractively, expressing compliments, and acting as though the future will be better. Acting and thinking happy thoughts can change your mood and this feeds into your mind. Foundation Top Picks!

Sunday, November 18th, 2007

By Sher Matsen Hi, I’m the Fashion & Beauty Consultant for Estate Jewelry International where we don’t just sell jewelry but “pamper” the whole you! It’s always tough finding the “perfect” foundation for your skin type, color, and texture. Some products are heavy, some don’t cover so well, others don’t blend well. We’ll review a few of the products which we tried. Tinted Moisturizers * Laura Mercier tint moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling fresh. Comes in 7 shades all very natural. It has an SPF of 20 and is fortified with age-defying antioxidants. * Elizabeth Arden tint moisturizer blends easily with enough coverage that you don’t feel naked. It doesn’t build up on dry patches. Demotologist tested. It has a SPF of 15 * Hydramax tint moisturizer is a lightweight hydrating lotion balancing moisture and coverage with natural-colour tint. Extract of Butterfly Lavender helps boost hydration by stimulating the water-trapping proteins essential for skin’s proper moisture balance. Comes in 2 shades. * Bobbi Brown tint moisturizer won the “Best New Foundation” award in Nov 2004 in Health Magazine. This formula is rich and luxurious so its perfect for anyone with extra dry skin. It blends easily and gives skin light coverage. Deeply moisturizes skin, to help reduce the look of fine lines. Dermatologist tested. * Avon tint moisturizer is great for younger skin, however it has a tendency to stick out like a sore thumb on dry skin. I tried applying it as a foundation with a make up sponge and as a moisturiser using my fingertips and both times my skin looked terrible. It has a nice feel and a pleasant floral scent but the overall look it gave me was not natural in any way, the dry spots on my face seemed to show badly. Perhaps better suited for pre 40’s skin.Liquid Foundations * Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk liquid foundation is lush yet feather light with a very sheer texture. It is exceptional at correcting discoloration, elimating redness and blotchiness. Comes in 14 shades. * L’Oreal True Match liquid foundation is a nice light weight and has terrific texture. No oils, fragrences or pore clogging materials. Contains vitamins B & E as well as glycerin to nourish the skin. Available in 24 colors. * Laura Mercier liquid foundation is water based yet exceptionally creamy with a nice smooth finish. It has great coverage for a non oil based product. It isn’t greasy or drying and the color matches well. Application is best with a sponge, and you can get more or less coverage depending on how much you apply. Takes a few minutes to set. * Revlon Age Defying liquid foundation has great coverage and does not feel heavy. It does have a fragrance which does not go away. May hot be the best choice if your skin is at all oily. By mid day face may tend to feel oily and some experience “zit” outbreaks. It has an SPF of 30. Limited colors. * T Leclerc Hydrating Fluid liquid foundation is best applied with a sponge or fingers. Its super thin so you hardly know its there. Comes in 6 shades. It has an SPF of 8.Mousse Foundation * Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse is my all time favourite foundation. It gives great coverage but you feel like you’ve got nothing on. It’s lighweight and easy to apply. I find it’s best applied with fingers. If your skins a little on the dry side apply a moisturizer and then the mousse and it says light weight. It lasts all day and I’ve never had a break out using this product. It’s advertised as a revolutionary whipped formula and that describes its texture perfetly. Available in 10 shades. * Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Mousse is easy to apply and it never looks cakey or thick. Good coverage for such a sheer foundation. Great for dry skin. If you have oily or dry skin you may find yourself oily by mid day. I must say the smell can be a little harsh. If your at all sensative to smells have a whiff before buying. Dermatologist, clinically, allergy tested. Recommended for all skin types, except extra-oily. * Erno Laszlo Absolute Finish Finishing Mousse Foundation is water free, air whipped providing flawless coverage. It is good for almost all skin types except for very oily skin and those that have a sensitivity to salicylic acid. Its very light and coverage can be sheer to complete. Stays on all day. Its a water free air whipped. Contains Emu Oil and essential fatty acids for non greasy moisturizing. Antioxidants vitamin A, C, & E to defend against free radical damage. It has UVA and UVB protection, and it is Dermatologist tested. Wouldn’t life be grand if one product worked for all of us. However, that’s not the case so although I try and review products I cannot tell you how they will work on your skin. Most reputable cosmetic companies will refund or exchange a product if you are unhappy with it. When you find a product that works for you stay with it. Remember your fashion statement includes the whole you from your hair to the polish on your toes, from your hat to your shoes, from your earrings to the rings on your fingers. So be sure to let the world know who you are and Make Your Fashion Statement! 5 Steps To Naturally Pretty Hands

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Carrie Lauth Your healthy habits have made the skin on your face look great for your age, but what about your hands? One day I looked down at mine and thought: “Ugh! When did my hands get so wrinkly and dry looking?” So I decided to do something about it. I found that there are 3 major enemies to your hands. If you know how to get aroundthese, your hands will be softer, prettier and younger looking. 1) Enemy #1: Water Housewifery and Mommyhood are hard on your digits. Washing your hands frequently afterdiaper changes, dishwashing, exposing your hands to cleaning products (evenenvironmentally safe ones) can be extremely drying, making your hands look old beforetheir time and also increasing the likelihood of getting little nicks and cuts that can llead to infection. So baby your hands - be diligent about wearing gloves while doing house cleaning. Better yet, slather on lotion before you put them on for an extra moisture boost. After every handwashing, repeat. And look for moisturizing products with oil, not water, asthe first ingredient. 2) Enemy #2: The Sun If you’re like most women, you put moisturizer and sunscreen on your faceevery single day. Why? To prevent premature aging, of course. Why do yourhands deserve less? Excessive sun damage is a major cause of premature aging. Protect yourhands with a good sunscreen. 3) Enemy #3: Dead Skin Your hands need exfoliation every once in awhile to look their best. Try putting a handfulof sugar in your palm and adding a bit of olive oil, and scrubbing for a minute. Rinse and thenmoisturize. You can also use a bit of lemon juice with the sugar if your nails need brightening. For a special treat, slather on a thick moisturizer after this routine and wear cotton gloves to bed. You’ll wake up with baby soft hands. Your hands work so hard. They deserve some tender loving care so treat them well. Your Ideal Client

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Mike Shannon A lot of small businesses make the mistake of thinking that their product or service is good for just about anyone. The logic is “why should I limit my market to a smaller segment of the whole and sacrifice a sale.” The problem with that logic is that for most products and services you simply cannot expect consumers of vastly different segments to view you as valuable. Teens have a different lifestyle than single moms. Single moms have different needs than country club executives. Country Club executives have different likes and dislikes than bikers. Targeting your sales to a smaller niche is a much better way to go. As a matter of fact, as counterintuitive as it may sound, the smaller the niche the better your sales. Who do you suppose are your ideal clients? Answer that by asking yourself who would want your product or service? Where do they live? How old are they? What do they do? What else do they consume? Understand everything you can about them. This will help you to construct partners who are also trying to reach the same people. It will help you focus on exactly where and how to advertise. It will help you stop wasting time and effort trying to get people outside of your ideal client profile to buy your product or service. Most of them never will anyway. If you spend your time talking only to people who are most likely to buy fom you, your sales will increase as a result. Lighting Up the Darkness

By Sharon Shore Listening to the news lately reminds me of an old Chinese Curse; May you live in interesting times. The world is a volatile place.. Today most parents dearest wish is to provide our children a safe place to live in, in a safe world, but our innocence has been shattered. We are unwilling witnesses to a total breakdown of humanity. After all, what safer place could we possibly imagine then a one room school house in Pennsylvania Dutch Country? An inner sanctum of purity and innocence. We are drowning in a violent wave of hatred and a global sanctification of violence. Are you prepared to stay afloat? Do you have your batteries and bottled water, your flashlights not to mention a few hundred dollars in cash (small bills of course)? The craziest thing is that this crap is all real. Its too much for a poor guy to handle. After all, we just want to provide for our families and teach our children to be strong and virtuous people. And where is that visionary leadership we are desperately searching and praying will somehow appear? Who will restore our confidence in our own ability to overcome this profound spiritual crises? In these interesting times, we stand witness to a turning point in the history of humanity. We need to rouse ourselves from the spiritual sleep we have lolled ourselves into. Like it or not, weve got to wake the heck up already. .We need to collectively muster the courage to have faith in the innate goodness of the world. There is strength in numbers.. A little candle can extinguish a lot of darkness. We need to reignite this flame of faith within ourselves and our children. Goodness can prevail over evil. If there seems to be a vacuum of leadership in the world, have faith that God will provide that leadership. When the forces of darkness produced Hitler and Stalin, God provided a Churchill and a Roosevelt. History speaks for itself; there is always a spiritual counterbalance. Have the simple courage to believe this. God is calling us to arise and take a spiritual stand. To ignite the flame of faith and courage within ourselves. If you light your candle, Ill light mine.
